camper

I like the idea of the camper, better than motels, however i bet those campgrounds fill up fast. may be hard to find a space unless we could reserve in advance.

Toy Hauler and Dates

I think GMU 68 looks good.  Should be able to get to the top of Sheep Mtn.  Definitely worth scouting.   I found a lady on line here in Phoenix that has a 27 foot toy hauler that she rents out. That is a camper that you  can put a UTV in the back of.  On line it says that it rents for $75 per day in September.  I am thinking of contacting her. There is Buffalo Pass Campgound on Highway 114 which is on the north boundary of GMU 68. That might be good for a toy hauler but that is still about 20 miles north of Sheep Mtn by forest roads.  Nearest motel is about another 15 miles down Highway 114 in Saguache. A better location would be Stone Cellar Campground which is on County Road 17FF if we can get there with the toy hauler. Stone Cellar is only about 5 miles north of Sheep Mtn. From Stone Cellar FR 790 "Big Dry" will take you to within 800 feet elevation and less than a 3/4 mile hike to the wilderness area.  FR 744 will take you almost as...

Sheep Mountain

If the wilderness area is in 68 we can get to the top of Sheep Mtn, elevation 12,085.  We can drive on a 4 wheel trail to 11,200 ft.  Last 800 feet will be a bit of a hike.  There is a second trail, the middle fork trail of Saugchee Creek goes to 10,060 but then the hike is another 2,000 feet. Just started looking.  The National Interactive Visitor Map looks great for finding roads and trails.  Just started looking on it.  Assuming part of Wilderness is in 68 we can get to it: FR 790 "Big Dirt" goes to within 3/4 mile o boundary.  Goes to about 11,200 feet. Sheep Mtn is  12,085. FR 783 "Middle Fork" goes to 10,000 or so then becomes a 20% hiking trail into the wilderness area. Trail 912 is hiking only 20% grade. FR 600 "Pool table" actually goes into the Wilderness area from the east but probably is south of where we want to be. It to becomes a hiking  trail.

I write this blog so that we have some place to share thoughts. I am just looking at the GMUs and comparing to the Colorado map.   It looks like 68 may have potential. Does 68 have part of the wildness area in it? Can we get to it? This summer it looks like if we go west from Saguache on  highway 114 for about 15 miles there is a dirt road going first west then south to a campground about 5 mile north of the Wilderness area. Also about 10 miles west of Saguache there is a dirt road going south to La Garta that has three campsites on it.  There surely would be trails and forest roads to the west we could explore.  Gip, are you free on the days of your wife's  event or are you committed to those events also.  I want to be at Rocking K for the Jackpot shoot on Wednesday the 22nd.  Might come early to explore with you. GMU 79 is also a possibility.  I don't think there is any wilderness in it and it appears there is a lot less National for...
