Toy Hauler and Dates
I think GMU 68 looks good. Should be able to get to the top of Sheep Mtn. Definitely worth scouting.
I found a lady on line here in Phoenix that has a 27 foot toy hauler that she rents out. That is a camper that you can put a UTV in the back of. On line it says that it rents for $75 per day in September. I am thinking of contacting her.
There is Buffalo Pass Campgound on Highway 114 which is on the north boundary of GMU 68. That might be good for a toy hauler but that is still about 20 miles north of Sheep Mtn by forest roads. Nearest motel is about another 15 miles down Highway 114 in Saguache.
A better location would be Stone Cellar Campground which is on County Road 17FF if we can get there with the toy hauler. Stone Cellar is only about 5 miles north of Sheep Mtn. From Stone Cellar FR 790 "Big Dry" will take you to within 800 feet elevation and less than a 3/4 mile hike to the wilderness area. FR 744 will take you almost as close but elevation is lower cause it follows Saguache creek. FR744 becomes a forest trail into the wilderness area.
What do you think about a camper?
What about dates? Working backwards from Fastest Gun Alive, I usually leave for Worlds on Wednesday the 23rd, that means I would have to leave campsite on 21st to get back to Phoenix with camper. If we plan on a 9 day hunt that would start on 12th. Leave Phoenix with the camper on 10th. That would be a 13 day rental. At $75 per day that would be about $1,000.00 by time you add in tax.
Is 9 days, 13 day rental too long? What do you think. Maybe 5 day hunt with 9 day rental?
Isaiah and Ben, I am considering toy hauler also for Arizona rifle hunt. Be kind of neat to stick kiddos in camper at Hat Ranch, then when the families pull out I could use it for rest of the season.
Little woman does not think I should go turkey hunting, so maybe that is one less trip for me. Texas state might be cancelled. If I had to chose between all of the fast draw titled events and the elk hunts I would chose the elk hunts.
Just thinking.
