Trophy Ridge React H5

The Trophy Ridge React H5 is not as easy to set up as the videos on youtube would lead you to believe.  My first problem was that the sight did not have enough right and left adjustment.  I had to move my biscuit whisker to get enough adjustment on the sight.  It is still not in the middle of the sight range and I will reset the rest at a later date to get more travel in the sight.  My bow is set for turkey hunting now, after that, I will again have my bow tuned and make some adjustment to my rest for more travel.

The main problem is that I am not steady enough to do a good job on the 20 yard pin.  I just could not shoot good tight groups at 20 yards.  That is the premise of the sight.  You need to have that pin dead on and then move one more pin.  In theory then the other pins will be set by the sight.  I was using Fleetwood arrows and that may be part of the problem.  The Fleetwood arrows are average of 435 grains with a plus or minus variance of 5 grains.  (One of my Fleetwood arrows weighed 446.1, which I ignored for the average.)  My Bloodline arrows have much less variance, about 2 grains.  I am shooting Fleetwood for turkey hunting because they are cheaper and won't cry as long when I lose them.

The second pin I set was the 40 yard pin.  I think the 30, 40, 50 yard pin all shoot pretty dead on, so I think the react feature works good.  I am at the very end of the speed range (slow) so my pins are at the maximum distance apart.  Trophy Ridge also makes a 4 pin react sight for slower arrow speeds.  My hunting arrows will be quicker so I will gain some additional range of motion when I change to them.

I really like the coloring of the pins.  It is green, green, red, green, green.  The 40 yard pin is the red and I can tell that will be my preferred distance.

I shot the Fleetwood arrows on 28 targets today on the mtn and was happy with my shooting.  On many targets I shot 50, 40, 30 yard shots and generally the pins were dead on. I shot the best at 50 and 40 yards.

This was shot from 50 yards, arrow in the kill zone, and then from 40 yards, arrow just below the nose.  You can see that the pins set by the react feature is better than I can shoot.  Today I was most accurate from 50 yards.

Arrows

I have not made a final decision on my arrows. I have 6 Bloodline 6mm 330 spline arrows with 100 grain field points on them.  They weigh an average of 411 grains with a variance in weigh of 2.1 grains.  I also have 100 grain broad heads for them.
I also have 6 Bloodline 6mm 400 spline arrows with 125 grain field points on them.  They weigh an average of 406 grains with 1.6 grains of variance. I don't have broad heads yet but I am considering a fixed blade of 125 grains weight.  Any suggestions would help.  I think these will be what I end up with.  They should be a tad faster and therefore will tighten up my pins on my sight.
I could put the 100 grain points on the 400 spline shafts. That would reduce the weight to 381 grains and would pick up some speed.  I am sure there is a trade off for that speed but it would tighten up my pins I think.

After watching some videos I am leaning towards a set of Wasp Dones 125 grain three blades. Should fly like my 100 grain Wasp Havelon.    Total arrow weight will be within 5 grains.

  1. The trophy ridge sight sounds good. will just take a little tweaking to get it just right for your style and form of shooting.

I personally would lean towards the bloodlines 400 spine with the 125 gr 2 blade broadhead such as the magnus stinger. just my opinion . but of course you will find out what works best for you. I have shot 125 gr montech g5's a 3 blade head, for the last 17 seasons and never thouhgt I would change. and with my present setup they worked very well the last 2 seasons that I have been shooting 48 lbs draw weight, complete pass through on whitetail doe. However I am worried about penetration on the much larger elk, therefore I am going to change to the 2 blade head for this season. I know they shoot very well, they are well made, and fly just like my field points, of course flying like field points most likely has more to do with bow tune than anything else. just my thoughts.
